Why should I go wireless?
Wireless Broadband lets you easily connect multiple PC’s to the internet in your home with no mess of wires to trail through the house. Its especially handy for laptops as you can move them room to room – or even to your garden, and still be connected to the internet.
How does it work?
The wireless system often works through a “router” or “hub” which connects to your phone or cable internet which broadcasts and recieves signals from each PC in the house, it also can act as a firewall, protecting all your PC’s from viruses and other malware. Each PC needs to have its own wireless card, to receive and send signals back to the router, although many new laptops have wireless capability as the card is fitted inside them as standard.
What should I look for?
Your router will come with a broadcast frequency on the box of 802.11 often with a suffix of A, B, G, or WiMax. Its essential if your buying your own wireless equipment that you buy a router and connection cards with the same suffix – to be safe it is often wiser to buy a router and connection cards by the same manufacturer. It is also worth asking what the range of your router is, so you know if your signal will extend into your garden or how many neighbours it might reach!!
Security
Because your wireless broadband can reach out beyond your property – it is worth finding out from your provider if you can use something like a Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) to ensure only you and your family can use your signal.
